What does “real opal” actually mean?

A real opal is a naturally formed solid opal – a stone that grew over millions of years from silica-rich water and consists entirely of that material. That is exactly what makes it so special: every natural opal is one of a kind, and its play of color can never be replicated exactly.

In the trade, four different things are sold as “opal.” This breakdown helps you keep track:

Solid opal (real)

A solid natural stone in one piece, with nothing added. The most valuable category – and the only truly “real” one in the strict sense.

Doublet & triplet

Genuine opal material, protected by additional layers. Not a solid opal – but the full glow of natural opal at a friendlier price.

Lab-created (synthetic) opal

Grown in a laboratory (e.g. Gilson opal). The same base substance, but man-made – and usually given away by an overly regular pattern.

Imitation

Glass, plastic, or opalite. Looks “opal-like” but chemically has nothing to do with real opal.

Real or artificial? How to spot the difference

The key distinction is between a naturally grown opal and one grown in a lab (synthetic). The telltale sign is regularity: nature never works with perfect precision – a lab does. Three things will almost always give you the answer.

The play of color is alive

On a real opal, the colors shift the moment you turn the stone. If the color sits flat and static, as if painted on, be careful.

The pattern is random

Natural patterns are irregular, with color patches of varying sizes. A uniform grid or a “snakeskin” pattern points to the lab.

The touch test

Genuine opal material feels “alive” and rather warm. Glass imitations often feel colder, harder, and strikingly light.

Beyond “real or synthetic” there is a second question: is the stone made of one piece or of several layers? One thing up front: doublets and triplets are not a scam. They contain genuine opal material – and the extra layers bring real advantages. This is what the three types look like in an actual cross-section:

The triplet in particular shows why layers can be a smart idea: the transparent quartz cap sits like protective armor over the delicate opal layer while giving the stone a beautifully domed depth. How to spot the layers

Hold the stone sideways against the light. A doublet or triplet shows a clearly defined, straight line between the layers – sometimes a fine seam. A solid opal lets light through from the side and looks continuous, with no dividing line.

Caution when buying online

When “beautiful” turns into “deceived”

Doublets and triplets are perfectly fine – as long as you are told honestly what you are buying. And that is exactly where the problem lies: some online sellers market opal doublets and triplets as real solid opals and charge solid-opal prices. Viewed from above, the difference is often barely visible – only the side view exposes the layers.

Frequently asked questions about spotting real opals

Can you tell a real opal with the naked eye?

In many cases, yes. The lively, irregular play of color and a look from the side already reveal a lot. Synthetic stones usually look too uniform, while doublets and triplets show a straight glue line in profile. For final certainty, though, you will need a professional assessment.

Are lab-created opals the same as fakes?

Not quite. Lab-created opals consist of the same base substance as natural ones and are grown in a laboratory. A true fake would be an imitation made of glass or plastic. It only becomes dishonest when a synthetic stone is sold as an expensive natural opal.

Are doublets and triplets worse than solid opals?

No, just different. They contain genuine opal material, the extra layers protect the stone, and they often make the play of color glow with special intensity. They are a beautiful, more affordable way to wear opal – what matters is that they are honestly sold as what they are.

Does UV light show whether an opal is real?
